Hiyori’s inner hollow wants Shinji’s inner hollow. So the two attempt to have satisfying hollow sex in exactly three minutes. It is a difficult task by itself. But it is made impossible with the inclusion of Hiyori’s hangups surrounding attachment and intimacy.
It doesn’t help that Shinji is conflicted between his desire for Hiyori and what he believes his role in her life should be.
