Summary
The phone rang four times before I heard his voice, crackled and hazy by the distance.
“Hello?”
“Richard.”
“Francis?”
“Yes.” I gripped the receiver very tightly in one hand, my other wound through the cord. I could feel my knuckles pressing my skin green-ish white.
“Where are you calling from?” I imagined what he might be doing on the other side. It was earlier in California, about 8:30pm. He must have eaten already. Perhaps he was laboring over his dissertation, marking students’ papers with a red-inked pen, a furrow between his brows and a drink in his hand. Perhaps he had someone over, someone frowning in the corner of the room with arms crossed. I imagined fluorescent lights and rawboned palm trees through the window.
“A hotel,” I answered briskly, and without delay added: “It’s over. I’m leaving her.”--
Post epilogue, Francis decides he can't endure his marriage and, desperate to get out of New York, goes to stay with Richard in California. But he isn't telling Richard everything, and tensions are bound to rise.

“This is why we don’t show ourselves in sunlight,” Henry said as he stepped towards it. “People would know we’re different. This is what I am.”
As the sunlight fell on him, the bare skin of his face and hands began to shimmer like so many crystals, like the finest diamonds; he was hard to look at. It was mesmerizing, spell-binding; I pitied anyone who never had the chance to see something so otherworldly and transcendent, so all-consuming. I could have been looking into the face of a god, come down from Olympus.
“You’re beautiful,” I said, unable to help it.
“Beautiful?” Henry bared his teeth in a cruel smile. “This is the skin of a killer, Richard.”
“Yes,” I replied, following him into the sun, “you are terrifying, and terror is beauty. Beauty is terror. Beauty is harsh.” I stepped even closer. “You said death is the mother of beauty. How could you not be beautiful?”

All the while the rain continued against the windows, and the radio remained low beside the bed, and at some point during those stretches of half-sleep, Ambrose realised the static had vanished altogether. Francis must have returned to his bedside to further adjust the radio’s dials, and not once had Ambrose stirred in the face of his presence.
Or, Ambrose hasn't been seen by the class in a few days, so Francis comes to pay him a visit. What he finds upsets him so greatly that for two hours, he grows out of his perpetual laziness to help out a friend. Who is definitely not just his friend.

She doesn't even like Judy. She's annoying and the sort of character Camilla would never associate with. The one who attends parties and throws beers at people drunk and has long acrylic nails and dyed hair. She's a stereotype—the type of girl who acts in the exact way dumb girls are thought to act. She's boring, with no depth to her. Shallow.
Camilla might not be in her right mind because despite knowing that, she stays in her seat and waits for an answer anyway.)

It had been decided unbeknownst to Richard—the Greeks had claimed him for their own. He had walked into their world with all the unassuming grace of a lamb, never realizing he had stumbled straight into a den of wolves. And the wolves had come to an agreement: Richard would be theirs.
During that harsh winter, Henry had saved not just one life, but two. He had been horrified to find Richard half-frozen, malnourished, and pregnant. The realization had hit him like a fist to the gut, Francis’ baby, no doubt. But that was a matter for another time. Richard didn’t even seem to realize it himself, given how skeletal he was. His skin, a dull shade of ivory, was stretched thin over sharp bones. He was bleeding from the temple, fragile body trembling as if caught in some waking nightmare.
