Summary
Jim and Spock encounter Talosians on a deserted world.
---------------------------------------------------------Jim feels his mouth go dry. The last time they encountered the Talosians, he almost lost his First Officer to the death penalty. Spock had commandeered his ship and risked everything to save his former Captain, Christopher Pike. Pike had been burned beyond recognition in a training accident gone wrong. And while he saved five young cadets, he sacrificed all but his life.
James T. Kirk brings himself back to the present and asks, “Why have you brought us here?” He catches a glimpse of his first officer out of the corner of his eye. For a Vulcan, Spock looks horrified.
“Jim.”
“Tell me.”
“The Talosians live vicariously through the emotions of others. The stronger the emotion, the larger the thrill.”
The Talosians’ voice surrounds them once again. “Crude, but essentially correct, Mr. Spock.”

Jim looked in the mirror, running his hand through his hair again. He really did not like these kinds of functions. The whole affair just seemed so pointless.
Getting dressed up, smiling politely despite not feeling happy, speaking with people you don’t want to talk with about topics you’d rather not get into. And then, of course, there’s the more handsy attendants, who seem to think that, just because they are ‘important’, or just because it’s a gala, they get to do whatever they want.
And Jim would just have to bear it.

Jim and Spock have been invited to a gala, where Jim gets immediately approach by about a dozen admirals who want to promote him. Jim doesn't like that very much.
