It's strange how easily he'd taken to calling the place home. In Colt's mind, he thought the only home he'd ever have was one littered with empty beer bottles, hushed laughter, and cleaning up wounds on quite nights. It's hard to shift his mental schema of what home is. There's so much warmth in his and Ryland's apartment, it's nothing like the house they grew up in— where all the warmth was carefully and quietly manufactured in a way that would fly under the radar. Colt's unabashedly happy here, it's a painful realization.

As Court rushes over to his side, Ryland stares up at him without comprehension, eyes wide and bloodshot. "You're not Simon."
"Astute." Court kneels down next to him, feeling his forehead gently with his palm. "How're you feeling, bud?"
Ryland hums, as though thinking it over. Then, earnestly, "I'm trying to find the real world."
He hasn't got a fever. "The real world?"
"Yeah."
"And this… isn't that?"
Ryland makes another humming noise, but instead of responding reaches up into his mouth and rubs his fingers aggressively along his teeth, stretching his lips at the corners with a wet squelch.
He gives a distressed "Hnngh" and Court realizes with a jolt of sickening dread that his baby brother is high out of his mind.

That's how Ryland likes to fantasize about it, at least. And then he imagines the happily ever after that follows once the protagonists get over their insecurities, and a part of him knows that if he gets to kiss Casey, if he gets to feel that soft smile against his lips even once, it would break him to ever let go."

And his twin has a dog and he sees that dog a lot, so does that make the dog also his? It didn't matter though, because at the end of the day, he was still stuck in space, 11.9 light years away from Earth. Which was fine. It was completely fine. He wasn't panicking.
